5th and 6th day

Okay again, sorry for the late update but the car has not been cooperating so we have making slow progress. We arrived at Carlsbad, NM yesterday after stopping every 40 miles to let the car cool off. We stayed at the Stagecoach Inn and haven't had problems yet. This morning we went to the caverns and took the self guided tour of the Natural Entrance and it was spectacular! We descended 754 feet in 1 mile and it was about 50°f so that was a nice break from the heat. Once done descending, we took another self-guided tour of the Big Room. Then wetook the elevator up and ate lunch. Later onwe took the ranger-led tour of King's Palace. The neatest thing about that was when we did a blackout (turning out all the loghts to show how it would be w/out a light) I was selected to flip the switch. That was pretty cool. Once that tour was done we just hung around the visitor center and waited for the bat flight. It is "advertised" that hundreds of thousands fly out at the same time but we saw probably about 200 over a 2 hour span. Pretty pitiful! But that almost never happens so if you do visit, I'm sure you won't be disapointed. We then drove back to the hotel and ordered Domino's with about an hour wait so we are still waiting! Stay tuned!

  1. Sounds like a WONDERFUL visit to Carlsbad... Granddaddy still talks about how impressive it was when he visited when he was just a little boy and they turned out all the lights. AND you got to be the one to make such exciting memories for so many on the tour by turning off the lights. Too bad about the bats. Looking forward to more posts. Love, Grandma
